THE KOKATAHI BAND
The Strohviol

John
Matthias Augustus Stroh is probably the best-known of the inventors of
the horn-violin, or phono-fiddle. The general principle is that the
bridge of the skeletal violin pases its vibrations to a thin metal
diaphragm where they are fed into and amplified by a horn such as was
used in early gramophones. There were also one-string versions.
More information
Stroh-violins are still made, and you may be surprised to find you can
buy a brand-new one for under 400 Euros - plus freight and GST, of
course. Where? Here.
They're sometimes listed on eBay, too.
